God is Just

Ezekiel 33:17-19  (The Message)
"'Your people say, "The Master's way isn't fair." But it's the way they're living that isn't fair. When good people turn back from living good lives and plunge into sin, they'll die for it. And when a wicked person turns away from his wicked life and starts living a just and righteous life, he'll come alive.”

Devotion—It Isn’t Fair!
Who has not heard a child utter this plaintive cry, "It isn't fair!"?   Big brother got to ride shotgun AND  he got to choose the channel when they got home AND his cookie looked a little bigger.  Children have an innate understanding of and an insistence upon justice.  That was also the lament of the older brother when the prodigal's return was celebrated.  "It isn't fair!"  I can understand how he must have felt at what he perceived as injustice.  He'd been so good and he didn't get so much as a lousy goat.

Similarly, the Israelites protested, "It isn't fair!"  But God's message to them was clear.  His justice was to judge everyone according to the choices they made on how they live and that included their sincere repentance for their sin.  An all encompassing acceptance of anyone who turns from sin to Him is God's fairness.  His love and mercy is ready for each and every person who seeks Him.  That IS God's fairness—indiscriminate grace.  None deserve life.  The wages of sin is death.  We are all guilty.  Our well reasoned justice would demand that we all perish.   But God's justice means, as Peter declared in Acts, "God plays no favorites!"  and, as Paul preached in Romans,  that Jesus gets things right again for all of us.    Hmmmm—maybe I'll go with God's version of justice after all.

I praise you God that you are just and that your justice is to offer your grace to everyone through your only son, Jesus the Christ.  I praise you that your gift of mercy is even for me.  Help me to be your voice and your hands of justice with its message of grace for all to this needy wayward world. Amen
