God is Counselor

John 14:16-17 (NIV)
“And I will ask the Father, and he will give you another Counselor to be with you forever---the Spirit of truth.  The world cannot accept him, because it neither sees him nor knows him.  But you know him, for he lives with you and will be in you.”

Devotion: Counselor—Represented by the Holy Spirit
In these two verses, Jesus asked His Father to send another Counselor – one who would be with us forever.  And God sent the Holy Spirit – the Spirit of truth – to live within us. We sometimes talk about ‘the little voices inside us’ warring for our attention over which path we should take.  Know and remember this:  The Holy Spirit is associated with truth and honesty and will never lead us to do anything opposing God’s word.  This is the voice we should follow.

A few weeks ago, Billy Graham’s column in the Indianapolis Star printed a letter that reminded me of my attitude years ago.  The gist of the article went something like this:  “I’m tired of religious people telling me what I can and can’t do.  I’ll decide what’s right for me.”  Billy Graham responded that he was saddened by this letter and that the person was on a dead-end road which would bring heartache and sorrow.  He went ahead to say that “God gave us rules to live by…because He wants us to be happy.”  AND that ‘When we ignore God’s rules…we end up only hurting ourselves.”  I cried over this letter and prayed that the person who wrote it – so bitter and filled with anger – would come to find and know Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior – and that this person would receive that precious gift of God’s Holy Spirit --- just as I did.

The Holy Spirit is God’s gift to us.  The Holy Spirit will never leave us.  The Holy Spirit lives within us.  Say that again!  The Holy Spirit lives within us.  This ‘helper’ we have been given is with us day and night.  That means ALWAYS.  He NEVER leaves us.  The Holy Spirit should be filling us up with joyful submission to the Word of God.  We are to be ‘filled with the Holy Spirit’ – ever ready to submit to the Word of God.  Warren Wiersbe (bible scholar and teacher) tells us “The Holy Spirit does not work instead of us, or in spite of us, but in us and through us.”

Father God…The road to heaven is sometimes rough, and we need your help.  Thank you for sending your Holy Spirit to live within us and to help us follow your word through the times when we are weak and troubled.  Help us to always trust and follow you as our COUNSELOR.  Amen.
