Leadership Council Minutes – 6/24/2019

Members Present: Rick Allison, Valerie Blessing, Kent Brumbaugh, Jeff Buck, Roger Core, Jeff Fill, Vic Hasler, Marge Patton, Melissa Truelove, and Mike Womack

1. Kent Brumbaugh opened the meeting with prayer.

2. Explanation from Pastor Jeff on the Children & Youth Discipleship Plan

  • The plan is based on the knowledge and experiences that children and youth need from birth to 18 years of age. Starting with the end in mind (18-year-old young adult ready to transition to independence – in higher education or in the workforce) and identifying the key building blocks/experiences necessary to get there.
  • Having a clear vision is the first step of improving Children and Youth Ministry.
  • Implementing this plan will require intentionality from adults in the congregation. Children and youth need 3-4 adults in their life who intentionally care for them and connect with them.
  • Life skills are lacking in youth and young adults today and could be taught during youth group. An example is babysitting classes and childcare courses offered by the American Red Cross.
  • The plan has been discussed with many groups of people including staff, Children’s Council and Youth Council.

3. Discussion and Comments on the Children & Youth Discipleship Plan

  •  If our focus is on this new vision, other ministries may be impacted and sacrifices will need to be made.
  • Trafalgar should be included in this vision as well. Pastor Jeff plans to preach at Trafalgar and introduce this plan.
  • The Facility Task Force Team Report needs to be reviewed before considering updates to the Children’s Ministry area.
  • Metrics will need to be agreed upon and monitored to see if the plan is working.
  • Children and youth have been discussed as a priority since the Leadership Council began 3 years ago. We need to endorse a vision and an action plan.
  • It is important to share the vision with the congregation in steps and communicate it well. Pastor Jeff plans to share the vision and explain practical ways for the congregation to be involved through speakers over a series of Sundays.
  •  The Leadership Council will include the Children & Youth Discipleship Plan as a recurring agenda item in order to maintain focus and attention on this important initiative.

4. A motion was made by Roger Core to accept the Children and Youth Discipleship document that was presented, setting this as a goal to implement this vision at Mt. Auburn. Rick Allison seconded the motion and it was approved unanimously.

5. Heather Bonser’s last day on staff is 6/28/19 and we will be celebrating her time at Mt. Auburn on Sunday, June 30 with a cake reception. Samantha Gregory has been hired on
an interim basis as the new Director of Communications. Many resumes have been accepted and we hope to have the position filled permanently by the end of July.

6. Mike Womack gave a brief summary of activities at the recent Annual Conference. While it was a tough conference, it was civil and there were no major disruptions. Mike Womack was the 5th lay delegate elected that is conservative. Every elected clergy delegate is progressive.

7. The Leadership Council took a short break and reconvened as the SPRC.
